She missed her prom, traded her glitter dress for diapers and double shifts, studied for her GED while I slept. So when my own prom rolled around this year, I told her: “Mom… you missed your prom because of me. Come to mine — with me.” She laughed, then cried so hard she had to sit down. My stepdad Mike was excited too. But my stepsister Brianna? She nearly choked on her Starbucks. “You’re bringing YOUR MOM? To PROM? That’s… actually pathetic.” I ignored her.
